Creative Capital 2026 Proposal
Project Title
Zen – Vincent – Philosophy: An Exploration Through Oil Painting.
Project Description
“Zen – Vincent – Philosophy: An Exploration Through Oil Painting” is building off of the life force behind Van Gogh’s paintings, with the help of Zen and Philosophy. It’s an exploration into the profound meaning behind creating a thing, and how that positive energy affects the outcome, and others that view it.
If you were to hang a huge banner of a painting by Van Gogh over the front of a spiritual/religious building, it would make sense. But why? It’s not because of the subject matter. It’s because of the Artist’s love and sincerity for that thing painted. That tree, that person, that chair are painted with a care as if to say, that chair could be the Buddha and everything exists on an equal level. Or that chair is, or it was, or it could be you in the future.
This is not an attempt to create artwork that could have been created by Vincent van Gogh or a Zen artist. In the end, the goal for this project’s artwork is to have the same intangible child-like spiritual energy that was behind the wheel of Vincent’s creative path. Vincent van Gogh was so connected to his paintings existing as a messenger, that a part of him is in each painting.
The aim is to tap into the Spiritual Energy of life that is flowing around everything. This will influence the style of this project’s painting and the subject matter. Could the outcome be like Hilma af Klint, or a Rauschenberg White painting, or a Jackson Pollock, or Paul Klee, or… ? My guess is all, or none of the above. I envision the art containing shapes, text in several languages, lines, scratches, thin paint, thick paint, recognizable elements and not. The visual result of this project will be represented on a series, or several series of oil paintings. Ranging in size anywhere from 1 to 8 feet.
To gain further insight into the life force behind Vincent van Gogh’s paintings, I will study his paintings in person at the MOMA and the MET. Rereading “Van Gogh and God: A Creative Spiritual Quest” by Cliff Edwards along with the endless resources covering his work in books and online. To better grasp Zen I plan to visit in person the Zen Center of New York City, the Zen Mountain Monastery, and the Village Zendo, along with reading books such as “Zen and Comparative Studies” by Masao Abe. In 2024 I took the online Philosophy course “Philosophy: God, Knowledge, and Consciousness” at MITx. This opened my eyes to a deeper Philosophical thinking and with that I plan on reading Immanuel Kant’s “Critique of Pure Reason” to help push this project forward.

1. How does your project idea take an original and imaginative approach to content and form?
Van Gogh attempted to follow in his Father’s footsteps as a Pastor but it was not meant to be. So how could he still express his love for life, and share this message with others? As a painter. I believe Vincent van Gogh’s art and Zen are pulling from the same path, or leading to the same path. Vincent’s art and Zen both embrace imperfections and find the spiritual beauty in them. Going against the common status quo of what is seen as beauty. And representing it in a way that the beauty in imperfections cannot be denied. So the intention for the result of this project is not a pretty picture. But by way of creation, the intention is that the process of “Zen – Vincent – Philosophy: An Exploration Through Oil Painting” will have a resulting impression that life is beautiful.
2. Place your work in context. What are the main influences upon your work as an artist?
The 2 biggest visual influences on my paintings in the past have been Impressionism and Japanese prints. But now, in the 2020s, it’s still Impressionism or Post-Impressionism but now more combined with Zen. That’s an important distinction, because every piece of art I make now has a purpose, it has a meaning. Meaning, it’s not just art for art’s sake. It’s art with language behind it. If it’s not saying something, then what’s the point. My current painting style is Fauvism, Post-Impressionism, and Expressionism. Influences on my art are, World Events, Zen, Philosophy, Van Gogh, Curiosity and Physics.
3. What kind of impact do you hope your project will have, and why?
Ideally, I want my Creative Capital project to be inspirational. My hope is there’s no one this project would not be an audience for. The World and the USA are in a terrible negative place right now. If this project can be some fraction of a positive movement towards bringing caring about the planet and humanity back as norm. Then that would be more of an impact than I could dream of.
Ultimately perhaps, art is meant as a way for us to see what is right in front of our eyes.
4. How is this a catalytic moment in your practice?
In the 1st half of the 2020s many of my paintings were influenced by the negativity coming from our political leaders. While acknowledging and documenting what is going on in the world around me as an artist seems necessary, that much negativity combined with art is a soul crusher. The negativity continues to grow day after day as of late March 2025, but I need to artistically and mentally move on from it.
My Creative Capital project would be diving deep into a movement growing in a positive direction. “Zen – Vincent – Philosophy: An Exploration Through Oil Painting” would be absolutely best described as a catalytic moment for me and my art. Transforming my own creative path and potentially the path of others if the journey is successful.
5. How would this support and being part of the Creative Capital community be impactful for you?
My artistic growth depends on outside influences. Having communications from other creatives and intellectual thinkers might be second to only the research needed for this project. I am 50+ and still painting in my basement with as of yet no financial return on the work put in. So I would gladly embrace development and marketing advice along with networking connections, to help grow my artistic career and have fun with a shared experience at the same time.

Wishing And Waiting: The Breakthrough #2.
Oil. 28″x22″. May 2023.
Wishing and Waiting is a problem I’ve struggled with my whole life, and seem to be unable to break it. First it only lived in my journal, and in 2023 I decided it was an Idea I needed to paint. The only thing that might break through this repeating cycle of Wishing And Waiting is time. But Time needs to be swung like a wrecking ball to break through this vicious cycle. Once the barriers are broken through, a clear and evident future of growth is visible.
This concept is so much a part of me, that I’ve painted it 3 times… so far.
