Bobby Anspach Studio Foundation ⤏

Grant Proposal

Christopher James Kull

January 2026

Zen – Vincent – Philosophy: An Exploration Through Painting is my project proposal for the BAS Foundation Grant. My Art Work Samples and my future project aims to not be redundant or cliche.

Over the past few months I’ve sent this Project Proposal to Artists Projects, Fellowships and Grants, with so far zero interest. But I love what I have come up with for this project, and I am now sharing it with you, The Bobby Anspach Studios Foundation.

Artist Statement

In Bobby’s “The Beautiful Nothing” Documentary what he is saying is reminiscent of what Alan Watts was saying in his many great talks from the late 1960’s and early 70’s on Taoism and Zen. The overly simplistic message from both could be summed up as, be a good person and live your life in that way. But the message from Bobby and other spiritual artists is trying to tell us to understand that we are all connected to each other, to plants, to planets and everything. And so what should be obvious is to be kind to everything and everyone because we are all a part of this big experiment in the universe. But the current state of humanity is addicted to spreading fear of an imaginary adversary. This is the artistic puzzle of living in the USA in the 2020’s, how to be surrounded by the non-stop flow of negative events, and have your art not add to the spread of negativity. My solution is doing the opposite of what social media does. Staying away from adding “clever” condescending commentary in the art, and instead treating my art more like a documentary piece. In this case specifically I will be documenting the results of my project proposal “Zen – Vincent – Philosophy: An Exploration Through Painting”. Preparing for this proposal I am reading many books about Van Gogh’s art and life, who also died way too young. I’ve learned that being a really thoughtful artist consumed more with mother nature and humanity in the art rather than focusing on making a pretty thing can be a heavy lift emotionally and often not immediately understood. A good example of this is Van Gogh’s “The Starry Night” painted at the Asylum a year before his death. Inheriting all of Vincent’s artworks after his death, even his family did not appreciate or want to keep this painting.

Even though I’ve been an active Artist for several decades, I’m still trying to find my path. But at its core perhaps creating art is what connects humans to our original selves, our original caveman. Or the better analogy is an idea from Zen author Masao Abe, where our “original selves” refers to what we were before we were born, before our parents met. And the visual result of that “time” would almost have to be childlike and seem simplistic at times, expressionistic, abstract, maybe even caveman-like. The goal is for the result of my artwork to take that creative direction when documenting “Zen – Vincent – Philosophy: An Exploration Through Painting”.

Learning more and more about Bobby from the BAS Foundation, he was and Is an awesome human being. Thanks to you, his life force, his chi will continue on this loving creative journey. It would be my honor and privilege to continue creating artwork devoted to interconnectedness with the influence of Bobby, with the help of the Bobby Anspach Studios Foundation.

Thank You

Fellowship Proposal

My project proposal Zen – Vincent – Philosophy: An Exploration Through Painting is an exploration into the profound meaning behind creating a thing, and how positive energy with no attached ego affects the outcome, and others that view it.

If you were to hang a huge banner of a painting by Van Gogh over the front of a spiritual building, it would make sense. But why? It’s not because of the subject matter. It’s because of the Artist’s love and sincerity for that thing painted. That tree, that person, that chair are painted with a care as if to say, that chair could be a Buddha and everything exists on an equal level. Or that chair is, or it was, or it could be you on some timeline.

This is in no way an attempt to create art that could have been created by a Zen Artist or Vincent, or even resembles them in any way.

The ridiculous and awesome aim of Zen – Vincent – Philosophy: An Exploration Through Painting is to tap into the energy of life that is flowing around everything. This will influence the style of this project’s painting and the subject matter. Could the outcome be like Hilma af Klint, or a Rauschenberg White painting, or a Jackson Pollock, or Paul Klee, or… ? My guess is all, or none of the above. I can see the art containing shapes, text in several languages, lines, scratches, thin paint, thick paint, recognizable elements and not. In the end, how can the visual result actually be anything when both Zen and Taoism are emphasizing less is more. That’s the beauty of this project. How to visually represent nothingness and everything, with a passion and love for the energy or Chi in things like Van Gogh had.

I think I have the artistic vision and creative individualism for creating something unique and great. One thing that has kept me from flying has been an attachment to Ego. This project with the help of tools like Zen, Taoism, Vincent and Kant has the goal of stepping out into the world, separating from the Ego, and letting the wind blow it away into particles repurposed as something useful.

A few more details on how I aim to achieve this project: In addition to reading the wealth of books on Zen, Taoism, Vincent van Gogh, and attempting to read Kant’s Critique of Pure Reason. I plan to visit Zen Centers in New York and or New Jersey to help gain a better grasp of Zen. To gain further insight into the Chi behind Vincent’s paintings, I will study his work in person at the MoMA, MET & Guggenheim.

Thank You
